Using a MAGNESIUM framed reel
in salt water

by Jim Johns

Are you tempted to use your magnesium framed reel in salt water? Here's what can happen if you are not VERY careful.

Both of these frames are from two Shimano Scorpion 1000MG reels. Compare the corroded one on the right with the almost-new one on the left. Notice the corrosion indicated by the lines. Pay special attention to the area inside the circle - it's been completely corroded away in several spots. If you look carefully you can see completely through the frame to the table below! Notice the small rectangular "tab" at the bottom left of the left reel - it's completely missing on the corroded reel. The side of the screw hole that holds the clutch plate is also missing (2nd line from the left).

FYI - as of 4/26/06, a replacement Chronarch 50MG frame retails for $111.55! Enough said.
